Xgħajra Scout Group

Xgħajra started out as a small fishing hamlet and a popular summer resort, situated in the East of Malta. Its population is now rapidly increasing and it is developing into a large seaside town.

Back in 1995, Xgħajra Scout Group opened the doors to boys who wanted to join the World Organization Scout Movement. On the 9th of November 1995, a meeting between SDC Mr. L. Bonnici, GSL Mr. S. Borg, the first mayor of Xgħajra the late Mr. France Minuti, the late Xgħajra local council secretary Mr. C. Camilleri and Mr. V. Abela, a member of the local council was set up to discuss the beginning of Xgħajra Scout Group.

The first official scout meeting was held on the 17th of November 1995. The first four members were Christopher Vella, Christian Vella, Marcel Borg, Gordon Borg and Mr. Saviour Borg who was the founder and first Group Scout Leader. During these first years, our activities were mainly focused on building a consistent number of Scouts. In the first year, the number reached up to 30 Scouts and Cub Scouts in total. A very encouraging era followed. Year after year, the group was reaching a higher number of members.  On the 28th of June 1996, the late Chief Commissioner Mr. J. Grech approved the registration form and Xgħajra Scout Group and was officially registered with the Scout Association of Malta.

In 1999, the Venture unit was formed and during the year 2000, the group admitted its first female members. This was a step forward for the group since this section was providing an innovative leadership strategy. In 2004, Xgħajra Scout Group invested in another dream of many Scouters, the creation of a Band. The band was formed from a few members with a small number of instruments; but in a small period of time, it advanced and it then evolved into a pipe band. On the 29th of January 2012, Xgħajra Scouts Pipes & Drums made itself heard along the streets of Xgħajra for the very first time. In 2014, the group accepted its first members of the Colony, and thus the Beaver Section was formed. In 2020, the world was hit by a global pandemic, and this obviously affected everyone, including us. However, we still managed to meet regularly, this time using various online platforms and our scouting spirit persevered. In 2021. the Rover section was officially opened, made up of members who joined the scout group as beavers.
